|2-No Frills
|1-The No Frills Food Guide.
by Freak of NFA
Being on the dole is an experience, and one of the main routines that
one gets into pretty early on is that of seeking out bargains in every-
thing you buy, especially food. Kwik Save have got the idea when it
comes to attracting customers, they sell good brands at low prices, but
the main attraction for people on the dole (which generally - though not
always - includes sceners) is their own "No Frills" products.
In this article I will list some of the more well-known items in the No
Frills (NF) range of goods, giving an opinion on several very important
factors that you always take into consideration when buying, mainly the
price and the quality. Star Buys will be indicated with "*" so that you
can look out for them in the future.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Item Price / Unit * Comment
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Baked Beans 0.07 / 425g * Excellent! NF Beans just can't be
beaten, ask anybody! Sometimes a
bit too much juice though.
Bread, White 0.23 / 800g Varies in Price and Quality, it is
usually a bit dry and around 25p
Cheddar Cheese / Nice strong taste but goes dry very
very easily indeed.
Choc Cookies 0.29 / 200g Good, but once you start eating 'em
you can't stop 'till you've finished
the packet off!
Coffee, Instant / Foul! This is the worst coffee I've
ever had the misfortune to drink!
Cornflakes / 750g Funny, they're certainly eatable and
very crunchy but too much malt has
been added in my opinion.
Crisped Rice 0.98 / 500g Rice crispies without the snap,
crackle & pop, eatable I suppose.
Crisps, Rdy Slt 0.31 / 6x20g Very nice as far as crisps go, but
the packets are small so you'll need
to eat TWO to feel satisfied.
Custard Creams 0.51 / 500g Good and firm biscuit, not as much
cream as other brands, but ny the
same token, not as sickly.
Hot Dog Sausages 0.19 / 400g What can you say? They're ALL poo,
these are no worse than any others.
Salmon Paste 0.28 / 75g Okay, it's recently gone down from
31p so it's even more of a bargain.
Salted Peanuts 0.28 / 200g * Amazing! They taste more or less
like KP but without the foil-fresh
taste, still, you can't ruin nuts!
Sandwich Spread 0.57 / 272g Very good, not dissimilar to Heinze
but less tangy and an awful colour!
Sunflower Spread 0.26 / 500g * I like this because it doesn't have
the stink that Summer County has,
it's low-fat and spreads from cold.
Tuna in Brine 0.37 / 185g Slightly smaller than Princes at
200g, you may want to take this
into account. You can't ruin Tuna.
Washing-up Liquid 0.07 / 1.0l It's like water! You need quite a
bit to get the bubbles but it works,
and at 7p you can't complain really.
Wheatabix / Don't touch 'em! They're about half
the density of the real thing and
crumble like you wouldn't believe.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I know that I haven't covered every NF brand available because they also
produce loads of other stuff that I'd never consider using, but I have
concentrated on the everyday foodstuff which are more important in my
opinion because it's the stuff you have to eat.
Please note that, possibly because of Kwik Save's pricing policy of a
set profit on each item, prices tend to vary, in some cases - like the
White Bread for example - they are pretty unpredictable, take this into
account before you go shopping.
